We've been screwing around with Logitech's new Vantage USB Headset for PlayStation 3 a lot lately. We're aware that it came out in March 2007, but it came in the mail so why not? Well, because it's a substandard USB headset that's still priced to compete at $30 on Amazon. But that's what we do here at UGO: test out the crap so you don't have to.
What's wrong with the Vantage USB Headset? Well for starters, there's not mute button to be found and no volume controls. Meaning players have to fumble around in the XMB to mess with these settings. Given the abundance of Bluetooth headsets on the market which offer built-in functionality for one or both of these settings, the Vantage doesn't exactly measure up against the competition.
Then there's the headset itself. While the package include three padding options for the earpiece - foam, crushed velvet and leatherette - none of them are particularly comfortable since the headset itself fits so tightly around the head. The length of each arm can be adjusted of course, but the overall fit is a tight one regardless. What's more, the attached microphone rides a little too close to the face for comfort. While the final inch or so can be angled somewhat, we were frequently distracted when the mic brushed against our lips.
Functionally at least, the Vantage USB Headset is solid. Sound quality coming through the headset is good, slightly muffled but relatively free of distracting ambient noise. And while we couldn't test the microphone's noise-canceling feature firsthand, our fellow players had no complaints about the sound. Also, the 10-foot cord provides more than enough reach for all but the largest media rooms.
That said, Logitech Vantage USB Headset for PlayStation 3 is showing its age. There aren't many options out there for wired PS3 headsets, but perhaps it's time for Logitech to improve on this year-and-a-half old design. The Vantage will perform its function adequately, but there are wireless options which will do it better for the same price.
