Good news for all you sci-fi masochists out there...the Hugo Award winning novels, The Hyperion Cantos, are being adapted into a movie. According to Variety, Day The Earth Stood Still director, Scott Derrickson, is set to helm to the single film.

The sprawling and heavy books encompass a future where humanity has fled far into the galaxy by way of farcaster portals made possible by a symbiotic relationship with a Core (big C) of artificial intelligences. The titular planet, Hyperion, is the centerpiece of the drama, where a group of pilgrims travel, for various and complicated reasons, to visit Time Tombs and combat the elusive Shrike, an unknown entity of razor-sharp limbs who impales people on his big metal tree. Told you it was heavy.

The second book, Fall of Hyperion, goes way beyond the first, and deals with a Messiah main-character, and a war between The Catholic Church, mutated space-humans and computers. It’s all over the place. If you haven’t read them, go pick up the Cantos, immediately. And while I’m excited to see this story on the big screen, I don’t see how they can turn a multi-book, huge storyline like this into a short two or three hours.
